a small gadget for the Mercedes G - lover

In 1982, the G-model attracts attention at the fourth Paris-Algier-D akar Rally: Belgian racing driver Jacky Ickx competes with his co-driver Claude Brasseur in a Mercedes-Benz 280 GE rally car. On the approximately 10,000-kilometer route through France, Algeria, Mali and Senegal (including 5,963 kilometers of special stages), the team achieves seven stage victories and leads the field of cars.

In general, the G makes an excellent impression with its concentrated performance in the precursor to today's Dakar Rally in 1982: They are robust and fast enough to take the crown of overall winner. But then this chance is given away by a navigation error, and the Ickx / Brasseur team finishes in fifth place in the classification for automobiles.

In the Rallye, which is held from January 1 to 20, 1983, the team wins in a field of a total of 385 participants, including 253 cars or trucks.Ickx sets an extremely fast pace, especially in the duel with René Metge (1984 Dakar winner) on Range Rover: For the first time in the history of the Dakar Rally, a car completes a special stage faster than a motorcycle. The 280 GE is aerodynamically optimized by add-on parts, weighs less than the standard G-model due to the use of aluminum parts, and engine output increases by 47 kW (64 hp) to 162 kW (220 hp). In addition, the front axle is modified, the rally car receives stronger springs and special shock absorbers, and finally sand tires from Michelin are fitted.

In 1983, the Paris-Algiers-Dakar Rally covers a total of around 12,000 kilometers through France, Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast, Mali and Mauritania to Senegal. This fifth edition of the "Dakar", which crosses the notorious Ténéré desert for the first time, ends with a quasi double victory for Mercedes-Benz: Because while Ickx and Brasseur lead the classification of passenger cars, Georges Groine, Thierry de Saulieu and Bernard Malfériol finish as the best truck with a Mercedes-Benz 1936 AK all-wheel-drive truck (261 kW / 355 hp) (19th place in the overall car / truck classification).
